Save $40 on SteelSeries’ Arctis 1 Wireless headset and much more at Best Buy

© Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Several PC components and gaming accessories are discounted today at Best Buy. Whether you are piecing together your next PC build or just want a few things to complete your setup, these deals might be what you're looking for. First off, the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless gaming headset is down to $60 ($40 off) when you buy it with at least $10 worth of Fortnite V-Bucks in-game currency. The lowest price we'd seen before was $80, and with this combo deal, you're looking at a total of $70 alongside the V-Bucks. Just add both products to your cart to see the price fall.

If you haven't heard of this model, it includes a USB-C dongle that can be plugged directly into the Nintendo Switch console for wireless audio. The sound performance and functionality are impressive for a headset at this price range. It works on other devices, too, by way of its USB cable that the dongle can plug into. It's compatible with PC, PS4, mobile, and, of course, the Switch.

Intel's 9th Gen Core i5-9400 desktop processor, with its included cooling fan, is down to $150 at Best Buy. This is $35 less than the competitors. If you're looking for a midrange CPU for your next (or current) build, this could be a good option. Just so you know, this six-core model includes integrated graphics support, so you don't necessarily need to pair it with a graphics card. However, don't expect incredible graphical performance from the CPU alone. You'll want a mid- to high-end graphics card to enjoy most of today's modern PC titles.

Western Digital's well-rated Black M.2 NVMe drive with 500GB of storage is down to $80 at Best Buy. If your motherboard supports M.2 expansion, this is a good way to really boost the speed of your PC's loading times. Additionally, popped into an enclosure, they can make for a really fast portable drive. It's not a huge amount of storage, but this is a smart upgrade if you want a speedy reserve of storage for nothing but your favorite games.

Xbox's Game Pass Ultimate three-month subscription costs $45 at Best Buy, and buying it will get you another three months of service for free. We've seen this deal pop up before, but whether you're playing on console or PC, this is a budget-minded approach to playing a lot of new games for not a lot of cash. Microsoft recently announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 will come to Game Pass on May 7th, and Gears Tactics was added to the lineup this week

You'll see the second three-month subscription appear in your cart after adding the first one.

‘Fortnite’ Omen Skin Added to Item Shop: Be the Hero Tilted Towers Needs

The Fortnite item shop has been updated, giving fans their first chance at unlocking the Omen skin. The latest hero sent to defend the Battle Bus costs 2,000 V-Bucks and comes with a unique cape Back Bling. Soar through the air on the back of his missile, blasting enemies away while looking great in spandex. To complete the ensemble, you can buy the Oracle Axe Harvesting Tool for 1,200 V-Bucks.

In the data mine for last week's v4.4 patch, another hero skin was found in the code. Fate, who looks like a reject from the Assassin's Creed games, is still nowhere to be seen. Expect to see Omen's partner in crime on the live servers over the next few days. I prefer Fate to Omen, so I'll be saving my V-Bucks I earned from E3 for the badass in grey.

Nintendo reveals 160,000 accounts were breached over the weekend

Nintendo revealed Friday that 160,000 accounts were breached since the beginning of April, by hackers using others' Nintendo Network IDs without permission. The company announced users will no longer need to use these IDs to log into their accounts, and that passwords on accounts that may have been breached will be reset.Over the past month, users on social media were complaining of missing funds from their Nintendo accounts and, in some cases, seeing their money being used to buy Fortnite's virtual currency, V-Bucks.In addition to logging in to potentially play other users' games, the hackers were also able to see individuals' date of birth, country or region and email addresses. They could also access payment services linked to these accounts, including PayPal accounts or credit cards to buy items on Nintendo's platform."We sincerely apologize to our customers and related parties for any inconvenience and concern. In the future, we will make further efforts to strengthen security and ensure safety so that similar events do not occur," said Nintendo in an announcement originally written in Japanese.A Nintendo Network ID is a unique username and password used mainly for older Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles. On the newer Nintendo Switch, users don't have to register a Nintendo Network ID and can simply create an account using an email address, although it was possible to link the two.Nintendo encouraged customers to check their purchase history for any unauthorized transactions and then request a refund. Credit card information wasn't exposed, however, according to Nintendo. The company is emailing affected users, urging them to change their passwords. Anyone who used to use a Nintendo Network ID to login should now use their Nintendo account email address instead. For an extra layer of security, the company is also asking people to set up two-factor authentication, adding a second method of verification such as linking to another app that will generate a code for each login.

Close Look at Marvel's X-Force Fortnite Skins in Action

Epic Games and Fortnite have teamed up with Marvel to unveil some special edition skins for X-fans. The popular X-Force characters of Cable, Psylocke, and Domino have been made available for purchase in the Fortnite store, currently on sale for less V-Bucks than usual when bought as a bundle. This is the latest Marvel addition to Fortnite, following the Battle Pass for the current season offering the opportunity to unlock a Deadpool skin. Previously, Fortnite had a mode celebrating Thanos and his involvement in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and skins such as Black Widow have also been available in the past.

On Friday's ComicBook Plays stream, Brandon Davis unlocked the Cable, Psylocke, and Domino skins in Fortnite to take a close-up look at them in the game. Each of the skins comes with their own backpack to complete the character's look, like Cable's cape and Psylocke'S Shurayuki blade.

In the video below, the costumes get an up-close look as they appear in Fortnite.

Playing with the skins didn't bring much luck to the ComicBook Plays stream on Friday, though.

While Cable and Psylocke were used early on, getting back in thee swing of things (remembering how to play) was done in time for Domino's efforts. In the video below, Domino is seen in action, taking out one of three remaining players late in a game but ultimately perishing in the storm to finish in second place. Heeartbreaking. Domino could've used a bit of that Deadpool 2 luck.

Twitch Is The Popular Technology Platform You Might Not Have Heard Of

If you're not one of the two million people who log onto Twitch each month, you may have never heard of the live streaming platform that was founded in 2011. Originally Twitch was a platform that allowed game enthusiasts to watch livestreams of gamers playing their favorite video games, including Fortnite, which manages to keep my son and his friends busy for hours (and angling to do extra chores in exchange for "V-Bucks"). Since 2011, the service has since expanded to include streams focused on artwork creation, music, talk shows, and even the occasional cooking show.

Twitch, owned by Amazon, not only allows users to watch live-streaming video broadcasts of gamers, but also allows you to livestream your own games and chat with other gamers. The most popular Twitch broadcasters have millions of followers and can earn money based on the number of people who subscribe to their channel.

As Twitch has evolved, it's also taken steps into the social media world. One of its features, Pulse, available on the app, works similar to a Facebook or Twitter timeline. App users can post status updates or like, share, and comment on other people's updates.

For kids who love gaming, Twitch is a chance to find their people—others who love gaming as much as they do. The platform has a community-like feel among users and even a quick glimpse into one of the chat rooms revealed the users chatting about jobs and hobbies. In a few of the chats, there was a friendly vibe to the chatter as friends wished each other goodnight and wrote ILYSM (if you haven't brushed up on your acronyms for a while, that's shorthand for "I love you so much") to each other. Although, just a few moments spent in a third chat room revealed bad language and crude words spelled just wrong enough to not be caught by a moderator in a chat that sometimes moved at a dizzying speed.

How Does It Work?

Finding Twitch isn't a problem — a version exists for nearly platform. The streams can be viewed via the official Twitch website or on an app designed for iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and 4, Amazon's Fire TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, and the NVIDIA SHIELD.

Story continues

You don't need an account to view the streams. Watching a stream requires you to do nothing more than type in the name of your favorite game into the search field, or click on one of the suggested streams. But if you're looking to follow a favorite channel or broadcaster, you'll have to create an account.

Is It Appropriate For Kids?

It depends. The heart of Twitch is gamers watching gamers play games, either for fun or to learn how to play the game themselves. A more mild game, like Minecraft, would probably be appropriate for most kids. A more violent game, like Call of Duty, would probably be less appropriate. Games come with ratings, much like movies. Whether I'd let my child watch a PG, PG-13, or R-rated movie would depend on the movie, the reason for the rating, and my child. I would use those same criteria to decide whether or not a game is appropriate, too.

Since Twitch is no longer exclusively a gamer platform, there might be even more content suitable for kids. Things like cooking shows and watching others create art are probably safe options. But finding that content isn't always easy, and there's no single place where all kid-friendly content is stored.

Aside from the content of the games or shows, the chat rooms may contain mature language from other users who comment on the games. When you click on a stream to begin watching, a chat room reminiscent of the AOL chat rooms of years long gone (have I just dated myself?) opens up. Moderators are quick to delete inappropriate comments … if they're caught. It's also easy enough to hide the chat, by clicking the x and collapsing the box.

And, although there are community guidelines in place, the platform is live. Which means there's no delay between what the streamers may say and do and when the content is published. This means the content may be unpredictable, and any given moment might be the one your kid sees or hears something you don't want them to see or hear, or don't want them to see and repeat — particularly in school, or in the middle of a long checkout line at Target.

What Should Parents Know About Twitch?

Minimum Age: The official suggested age for users is 13 and older, but there's no verification at sign up to make sure younger users don't sneak on.

Subscriptions: Twitch is free to use, but there's a fee to subscribe to channels. Subscribing to channels grants access to ad-free viewing and subscriber-only chats. And speaking of fees, anyone can become a broadcaster—there's potential to earn real money from each subscription.

Direct Messaging: Twitch has a direct messaging feature that allows any users to contact each other privately. There is a way to change the settings to block messages from any strangers, and I'd highly recommend using this feature to avoid anybody creeping into your kid's inbox.

Screen Time: If screen time is already a concern, Twitch has the potential to make things worse. There's an endless supply of content to stream. In 2018, 1.1 million years of content was streamed.

Ultimately, Twitch is a live streaming platform with social media-like communication abilities. Parents need to be aware of the features and potential dangers lurking on Twitch. They should pay attention to who their kids are chatting with, what they're watching, and how they're watching it. As with any social media platform, online safety is important, and begins first and foremost with a conversation with your children.

Whether they're on Twitch or a different social media platform, a good first step is to understand what benefit or joy your kids are receiving from the site and balance that with the need to keep them safe. And then, let the gaming — or watching other people gaming — begin!
